I have had so many gals ask me how in the world do I mix patterns? What's my secret? To be totally honest I do not have a secret. But there are some "rules" to follow. I'll be breaking down some of my favorite tips in hopes to help you get that coordinated look for your home.
Patterns are a fun way to add color and texture. One of my favorite ways to decorate is with pops of color. Keep your main large pieces such as couches, curtains and wall colors neutral. That way you can add fun pops of color with your accent pieces such as pillows, decor and paintings. I love to switch things up a lot and it keeps me from breaking the bank. So let's get down to the nitty gritty of it....
Working in odd numbers is the only way to go. Or as I would say the rule of three
You do not want your prints competing with one another. As you can see I have one large print, one medium print and one small print. They complement each other, not taking away from the other. I personally like my large pieces such as curtains, headboard or a rug to have a larger print. Smaller patterns work best for a accent chair or decorative pieces. A neutral solid background pulls colorful patterns together to create visual interest without overwhelming a space.
Incorporate All of Your Colors
Accentuate underplayed shared colors in the patterns. Select the largest pattern first to serve as a jumping-off point for other patterns, colors and accessories. If you use one pattern, such as a stripe, repeat it somewhere else in the room, even if the color and scale change. I prefer to use the largest pattern that will incorporate all of the colors I am using in my room. That way you can add beige, orange, red and a pop of magenta. Here is a great example of using that beautiful blush color through out the room.
Do not forget the solids, especially in a room with a bold color palette. Patterns tend to pop in a room that has a neutral furnishings such as a neutral wall or solid couch. Balance is key!

Do not be afraid to get a little crazy! I absolutely love the unexpected where you throw all kinds of prints and textures together. Designer Katheryn M. Ireland says, "I say, if it doesn't go, it goes."
Best tip I have is to experiment, one thing I always tell my clients, "If you love it, get it!" You can always make it work. I know there are "rules" to matching patterns just remember to keep scale and color in mind when you are on the hunt for your new accessories.
I hope this helps you out and inspires you. Wishing you a wonderful week!
